5 documentaries about climate change you should watch

5 documentaries about climate change Old Dog

With all the climate challenges we are facing, how can we best focus our attention and energy? The rapid melting of glaciers is causing ocean levels to rise, while the warming oceans are killing off the planktonic creatures that lie at the base of the marine food chain. Ocean acidification is destroying the coral reefs that support endangered water-based creatures including whales, polar bears, and the Harp Seal to name a few. But you probably know about all of this.

What you may not know is how YOU can help move the world toward a sustainable future.

Education is key in the battle against climate change, and we believe that REAL solutions cannot be addressed without also challenging Capitalism, the economic system that values growth and profit above all things.

We human beings are capable of changing our reality, but to do that, we must learn what is happening in our world. At Old Dog Documentaries we have been working on environmental issues for more than three decades and we want to share 5 documentaries that will allow you to learn more about climate change.

  1. Before the Flood

If you could know the truth about the threat of climate change – would you want to know? Before the Flood, presented by National Geographic, features Leonardo DiCaprio on a journey as a United Nations Messenger of Peace, traveling to five continents and the Arctic to witness climate change firsthand. He goes on expeditions with scientists uncovering the reality of climate change and meets with political leaders fighting against inaction.

The story of teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg is told through compelling, never-before-seen footage in this intimate documentary from Swedish director Nathan Grossman. Starting with her one-person school strike for climate action outside the Swedish Parliament, Grossman follows Greta—a shy student with Asperger’s—in her rise to prominence and her galvanizing global impact as she sparks school strikes around the world. The film culminates with her extraordinary wind-powered voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to speak at the UN Climate Action Summit in New York City.

This film tells stories about people and places that are transforming the world.

Chris Wood of BALE (Building A Local Economy) was inspired to create a film that would answer the question: “Will we have the wisdom to survive climate chaos and planetary destruction?” – after he had seen Old Dog Documentaries’ film:  THE WISDOM TO SURVIVE: Climate Change, Capitalism, and Community.

Dancing with the Cannibal Giant: New Stories for the Great Transition offers five stories that answer this very question, and invite its viewers to ask themselves: what am I doing and what are we doing, together, to put the giant back to sleep?

This film accepts the consensus of scientists that climate change has already arrived, and asks—what is keeping us from action? In discussions with thought leaders, spiritual leaders , indigenous people and activists, we explore how unlimited growth and greed are destroying the life support system of the planet, the social fabric of the society, and the lives of billions of people.

Those who teach courses that include environmental issues have a new, free resource for their classes: a 29-minute documentary on the impacts of the Trump Administration’s rollbacks of environmental regulations. Rollbacks: An Assault Against Life on Earth examines some of the more than 100 regulations that have been weakened or rescinded since the 2016 election and ties the effects of those rollbacks to increases in asthma and other diseases as well as such climate change disasters as raging wildfires, droughts and devastating floods.

Often the solution is in front of our eyes and we just need to open the door to make a change in the way we are living. These documentaries are only the door. The change you are looking for – of having a better world – is yours to make
